Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, representing the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), was formally sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou on Tuesday. The ceremony took place before National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula during the afternoon sitting of the House.

Kamau took the oath pledging to serve the people of Ol Kalou faithfully and uphold the Constitution of Kenya. The Speaker reminded lawmakers to maintain decorum during the solemn process, calling for silence before the oath was administered.

Upon taking the oath, Kamau declared, "I will bear true faith and allegiance to the people and the Republic of Kenya, obey, respect, uphold, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, and faithfully discharge my duties as a Member of Parliament." He then signed the oath register, officially assuming office.

Earlier on the day of his swearing-in, Kamau shared his journey from Ol Kalou to Parliament via public transport on social media, expressing gratitude to God and his constituents.

Electoral Victory and Political Significance

Kamau secured a commanding victory in the recent Ol Kalou by-election on the DCP ticket, garnering over 35,440 votes compared to 5,450 votes for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah. The by-election featured nine candidates, including representatives from Jubilee, PNU, PDP, and other parties.

This win marks the first time the DCP has gained representation in the National Assembly since its formation, positioning the party as a new parliamentary player.

Campaign Dynamics

  • The Kenya Kwanza coalition, backing UDA's Muchina, emphasized government development projects with support from cabinet secretaries and local leaders.
