Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has been dropped from the Senate Committee on Roads, Transport and Housing, a position she used to advocate for persons with disabilities.
Asige expressed disappointment over the removal but affirmed her commitment to serve Kenyans despite the setback. She highlighted her efforts to promote inclusive transport, sustainable urban development, and accessibility for over eight million persons with disabilities, as outlined in the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2025.
"I have diligently carried out my parliamentary duties despite living with a disability," she said in a statement shared on social media.
While she did not explicitly blame the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership, Asige hinted the reshuffle might be punitive. "If this is punishment by the leadership, so be it, but God can turn a bad situation into a glorious occasion," she added.
Wider ODM Senate Committee Shake-up
Asige's removal is part of a broader reorganization within the Senate affecting several ODM legislators perceived to be aligned with the United Opposition and the Linda Mwananchi faction.
- Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was removed from the influential Senate County Public Accounts Committee and is expected to move to the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee.
- Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was ousted from the Senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee and will join the Trade, Industrialisation and Tourism Committee.
- These changes are pending approval by the Senate House Business Committee and are anticipated to deepen internal party tensions.
The reshuffle follows Sifuna's earlier removal as ODM Secretary General amid internal party disagreements, with the Registrar of Political Parties subsequently recognizing the new leadership.
