Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who also serves as Secretary General of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has accused police of unlawfully detaining Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia despite a court directive for his release on bail.
Speaking on August 3, 2026, outside Kamukunji Police Station where Kaguchia was held, Methu revealed that the MP spent around five hours at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) before being moved to Kamukunji.
Court Order Ignored
Methu explained that lawyers representing Kaguchia secured a court order instructing the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kamukunji to release the MP immediately upon payment of a Ksh100,000 cash bail. The order was delivered to the police by 5 p.m., but Kaguchia was not released as expected.
Instead, police referred them to Central Police Station to pay the bail, where officials expressed confusion over handling bail payments for detainees held elsewhere. Attempts to resolve the matter extended into the evening, with Kamukunji Police Station closing around 8 p.m. while Kaguchia remained in custody.
Political Implications and Reactions
Methu condemned the continued detention as a violation of constitutional rights and described it as a political witch-hunt possibly linked to President William Ruto. He affirmed that neither the arrest nor the prolonged custody would weaken the DCP's resolve.
The arrest followed Kaguchia's appearance on a television program, where he reported being surrounded by heavily armed officers at the Royal Media Services studios. Details of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.
DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua also criticized the arrest, emphasizing that the criminal justice system should not be used for political vendettas and stating that Kaguchia's detention would only strengthen supporters' determination.
John Kaguchia, representing Mukurwe-ini Constituency in Nyeri County, is known for his outspoken positions on national issues and is aligned with the DCP under Gachagua's leadership.
