Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango has voiced strong opposition to recent changes in Senate committee memberships, describing them as politically motivated rather than based on merit.
Speaking on the Senate floor on August 4, 2026, Murango emphasized that while all senators have the capacity to contribute to committees, the selection should prioritize expertise and experience.
Defending Senator Sifuna
Murango particularly defended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, questioning the justification for his removal from a key committee. He argued that dismissing capable senators undermines the effectiveness of the committees.
"Removing Senator Sifuna under the pretext of lacking ability is like trading a gun for a stick in battle," Murango remarked, highlighting the absurdity of the decision.
Call for Fairness and Meritocracy
The senator compared the situation to a carpenter choosing nails, noting that bent nails are often discarded while straight, strong ones are hammered in. He suggested that similarly, competent senators like Sifuna and Olekina are being sidelined.
After a period of silence, Murango expressed his decision to speak out against these practices, urging Senate leadership to halt politically motivated reshuffles and prioritize institutional strength.
"If we want our committees to function properly, we must choose members based on ability, not politics," he stated.
