Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has voiced strong concerns over increasing political intolerance in Kenya, particularly criticizing the police's approach in detaining Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Onyonka described the arrest of Kaguchia at the Citizen TV studios as heavy-handed and counterproductive. He recounted how masked officers, armed with AK-47s and multiple vehicles, surrounded the premises, forcing Kaguchia to remain inside the studio overnight.
"He's a member of parliament. I don't think he's going to run anywhere or has committed a violent crime," Onyonka said, emphasizing that while he does not condone Kaguchia's remarks, the arrest should have followed due process without instilling fear.
Kaguchia faces backlash after his speech at a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County, where he warned Mt. Kenya residents against voting for President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. His comments, made in Kikuyu, included threats to "track and smoke out" supporters of the president, sparking widespread criticism.
Concerns Over Due Process and Public Participation
Onyonka urged authorities to adopt more measured methods when summoning or arresting public officials, suggesting initial warnings or invitations to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) instead of dramatic public arrests.
He warned that aggressive police actions outside media houses could discourage politicians and other guests from participating in public discourse through television interviews, thereby undermining democratic engagement.
Currently, Kaguchia is detained at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road as investigations continue.
