Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged the Senate to investigate the ongoing issue of unpaid salaries, unremitted statutory deductions, and outstanding terminal benefits affecting more than 3,000 employees of Hela Intimates EPZ Ltd.

In a formal statement submitted to the Senate Labour and Social Welfare Committee, Sifuna highlighted the plight of the affected workers who have not received their rightful payments amid the company's financial difficulties.

The Senator called for comprehensive measures to be put in place to protect workers and suppliers in situations where companies close operations without fulfilling their financial obligations.

Key concerns raised include:

  • Delayed payment of salaries to over 3,000 Hela Intimates workers.
  • Unremitted statutory deductions such as pension and taxes.
  • Unpaid terminal benefits owed to former employees.

Sifuna's intervention aims to prompt legislative action that ensures accountability and safeguards workers’ rights in the export processing zone sector and beyond.
