Residents of Siaya County have voiced frustration over the slow progress in rural electrification, despite the county being home to Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
Many households across Siaya continue to depend on candles and traditional lanterns due to lack of reliable electricity connections. This situation persists even in areas like Ng'iya, which is considered relatively better served.
A local resident expressed disappointment, highlighting the contrast between Wandayi's role and the county's electrification status. "Despite the Cabinet Secretary in charge of energy coming from Siaya, many homes still use outdated lighting methods," the resident said.
The resident also recalled Wandayi's earlier promise that even grass-thatched houses would be connected to the national grid, urging the Energy CS to fulfill this commitment.
Concerns Over Insecurity Linked to Power Outages
The ongoing power shortages have been linked to increased insecurity in the county. Frequent blackouts and unreliable electricity supply have reportedly created opportunities for criminal activities, affecting community safety.
Residents are calling on the government to prioritise expanding electricity access throughout Siaya to improve living conditions and security.
"We are pleading with the Energy CS from Siaya to address the electrification challenges. The inconsistent power supply is a major concern, and it is contributing to insecurity," the resident added.
The community awaits a clear plan from the Energy Cabinet Secretary on how to enhance electricity coverage in the county, hoping to move beyond reliance on candles and lanterns.
