A new study reveals that a silver-based liquid treatment can effectively halt tooth decay in children without the need for drilling or injections.

Researchers from the University of Michigan conducted a Phase III clinical trial involving 830 children under six years old. They found that applying silver diamine fluoride (SDF) directly onto decayed baby teeth every six months stopped cavity progression in over half of cases.

The treatment is simple, quick, and painless. Dentists brush the liquid onto the affected teeth using a small sponge applicator, a process that takes just seconds and requires no removal of tooth material or sedation.

Benefits and Limitations

  • SDF is inexpensive and easy to apply, making it accessible for children and populations with limited dental care.
  • It may prevent severe tooth pain, infections, and reduce hospital visits related to untreated cavities.
  • The main drawback is cosmetic: the treated decay turns permanently black, although healthy tooth tissue remains unaffected.

Dr Margherita Fontana, lead investigator and professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, highlighted the treatment’s safety and effectiveness even in children as young as one year old.

Global and Local Impact

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children worldwide, affecting over 40% of children in the US and nearly half of Kenyan children under five, according to Kenya’s National Oral Health Strategic Plan 2022–2026.

The World Health Organization estimates that untreated dental caries affect millions globally, contributing to pain, infection, eating difficulties, and missed school days.

The silver diamine fluoride treatment could be especially beneficial for young children, older adults, disabled individuals, and those fearful of dental procedures or with limited access to dental services.

Wider adoption of this therapy may reduce the need for invasive dental treatments and improve oral health outcomes in vulnerable populations.
