Somalia and China have recently held high-level discussions to enhance their defence cooperation as Mogadishu intensifies efforts against Al-Shabaab insurgents. The talks took place between Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallin Fiqi and Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu at the Ministry of Defence in Mogadishu.

The meeting focused on expanding bilateral defence ties, improving Somalia's military institutions, and boosting the operational readiness of the Somali National Armed Forces. Both sides reviewed existing security cooperation and explored new opportunities to deepen collaboration in the coming years.

The discussions coincide with regional debates on the future of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Troop-contributing countries recently convened in Kampala, urging the United Nations to extend logistical and operational support for AUSSOM by 18 to 24 months. This extension aims to ensure a smooth transition as Somali forces gradually assume greater responsibility for national security.

Regional leaders warn that premature withdrawal of international assistance could create security gaps exploitable by Al-Shabaab. Continued support is deemed essential for consolidating gains and building resilient Somali security institutions.

China’s Role in Somalia

China has maintained a longstanding diplomatic relationship with Somalia, supporting infrastructure projects, humanitarian aid, and advocating for Somalia’s sovereignty on international platforms. Beijing’s engagement aligns with efforts to promote peace and stability throughout the Horn of Africa.

This renewed defence dialogue underscores the mutual commitment of Somalia and China to bolster security cooperation amid ongoing challenges posed by insurgency and the complex security transition.
