Somalia’s Parliament has announced August 10 as the date to elect a new Speaker of the House of the People, following the vacancy left by Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, who became President of South West State.
The Parliamentary Committee responsible for the Speaker election convened for the first time at Villa Hargeisa and established the official timeline and candidate requirements. MP Abdirizak Omar Mohamed was appointed chair of the election committee.
Candidate Eligibility and Registration
- Must be a member of the House of the People
- At least 35 years old
- Both parents must be Somali citizens
- No prior citizenship of another country; dual nationals must renounce other citizenship if elected
- No criminal convictions related to offenses against the Federal Republic of Somalia
Applicants are required to submit several documents including a letter of application, CV, national ID copy, two passport photos, and proof of payment of the registration fee, which is set at $15,000 for women and $30,000 for men.
Election Timeline
- Candidate registration will be open on August 5 and 6 from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm at Villa Hargeisa
- Verification of submitted documents is scheduled for August 8
- Final preparations for the election will take place on August 9
- The Speaker election will be held on August 10
