South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has removed Johnny Ohisa from his role as governor of the Central Bank, continuing a series of high-level government changes.
The announcement came late Wednesday through a presidential decree broadcast on state media, though no specific reasons were provided for Ohisa's dismissal. He was replaced by Addis Ababa Othow, who previously served as the central bank governor between June and November last year.
Ohisa, an economist with multiple prior terms as central bank governor, had been reappointed earlier this year. His tenure coincided with significant economic challenges in South Sudan, including falling oil revenues, persistent cash shortages, rising inflation, and currency depreciation.
Analysts interpret the recent reshuffles in the country's senior government ranks as President Kiir's attempt to strengthen his grip on power amid uncertainties surrounding succession.
