Spotify is addressing growing concerns over artificial intelligence-generated artist profiles on its platform by introducing a new feature called AI Persona labels. These badges will clearly mark artist profiles created or represented by AI rather than real individuals.
The move comes after listeners reported feeling misled when they discovered that some artists they followed were actually synthetic personas. To provide upfront transparency, Spotify will display the AI Persona label in several key areas starting mid-September:
- On the artist’s profile page, including the banner and About section
- Within search results
- On track listings in playlists
Clicking the badge will reveal whether the AI identity was voluntarily disclosed by the artist or identified through Spotify’s review process.
Importantly, music from AI Persona profiles will be excluded from Spotify’s personalized recommendations by default. This means such tracks will not appear in algorithm-driven playlists like Discover Weekly unless users actively choose to follow those artists, making it an opt-in feature.
Verification and Detection Process
Starting August 11, artists can self-report their AI Persona status via Spotify for Artists. Spotify expects many to disclose voluntarily, citing positive reception to its earlier AI Credits feature. However, the platform will also deploy human reviewers and AI detection tools to identify undisclosed AI profiles, initially focusing on artists with larger audiences.
Artists flagged by Spotify’s team will be informed and given the opportunity to confirm or contest the label. In the near future, Spotify plans to enable listeners to report suspected AI Personas, though details of this system are still forthcoming.
Broader Efforts to Enhance Platform Trust
The AI Persona label complements other initiatives launched this year to boost trust and authenticity on Spotify. These include:
- Verified by Spotify – confirming real artist identities
- Artist Profile Protection – preventing music misattribution
Hundreds of thousands of profiles, mainly independent artists, have already been verified.
In a related effort, Spotify recently spotlighted Grammy-nominated jazz singer Somi as its EQUAL Africa Artist for August, coinciding with her new album release. The EQUAL Africa program supports women shaping the future of African music, reinforcing Spotify’s commitment to promoting genuine artistry alongside its AI Persona initiative.
