Spotify has launched a new feature called User Notes, allowing users aged 16 and above to attach personal messages to songs in their playlists or libraries. This tool lets listeners document memories tied to tracks, such as graduations, weddings, road trips, or emotional milestones.

The rollout follows Spotify’s recent cultural event, Greasy Tunes Nairobi, a 12-day residency showcasing Kenya's vibrant music and creative scene. The initiative highlighted Nairobi’s significance as one of Africa's youngest and fastest-growing streaming markets, with over half of its Spotify users aged between 18 and 24.

Features and Availability

  • User Notes: Enables users to add and share short notes about songs, enhancing collaborative playlists with contextual stories.
  • Running Mode: An AI-powered workout playlist generator that customizes music based on workout type, pace, and session length, currently available to Premium iOS users in select countries.
  • Talk to Spotify: A conversational assistant that helps Premium users discover music, ask artist-related questions, and get personalized recommendations via voice or text.

Spotify continues to refine music discovery with smarter recommendations and improved playlist management, including enhanced queue controls and shared listening insights for collaborative playlists.

Kenya’s Growing Role in Spotify’s Expansion

Spotify’s focus on Kenya is evident through its investment in local talent and culture, as seen in the Greasy Tunes Nairobi event held at Heltz House, Ngara. The residency featured live performances, workshops, and community sessions engaging musicians, producers, podcasters, and fashion designers.

Although Spotify has not yet confirmed when User Notes and other new features will be available in Kenya, the company’s commitment to the local creator economy signals that Kenyan users remain central to its growth strategy in Africa.

As Spotify broadens its AI capabilities and personalized experiences globally, Kenyan listeners can anticipate future updates bringing these innovations to their market.
