Standard Chartered Bank Kenya is set to sell its headquarters along Westlands Road, valued at approximately Sh1.41 billion as of June 2025, with plans to lease back part of the building to continue operations.
The bank aims to complete the transaction by the end of this year. This move aligns with its broader strategy to reduce physical branch presence while enhancing its digital banking platforms.
Reducing Physical Footprint
Chief Executive Officer Birju Sanghrajka explained that when the bank moved into the building in 2010, it occupied the entire structure, including six floors and the ground floor. Currently, it uses only two and a half floors plus the ground floor despite a significantly larger business.
"The process of selling the headquarters has been ongoing. We are evaluating bidders and hope to conclude it this year," Sanghrajka said. "The leaseback arrangement allows us to continue operating from the same location efficiently."
Strategic Property Sales
- The headquarters sit on 1.88 acres with an estimated rental value of Sh196 million.
- In recent years, the bank has divested other properties, including Treasury Square in Mombasa and a branch in Nyeri.
- The Mombasa building, housing Standard Chartered's first branch opened in 1911, had its valuation adjusted to Sh198.6 million in 2024.
- The Nyeri property was listed for sale in 2024 with a valuation of Sh175 million.
- Last year, the bank sold freehold land and buildings worth Sh215.2 million.
These sales reflect a strategic shift from owning to leasing property, enabling Standard Chartered Kenya to concentrate on its core banking services, particularly wealth management and corporate and investment banking, while maintaining a strong digital presence.
The lender will continue to hold two other properties located in Nairobi and Nanyuki.
