Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a 35-year-old man suspected of involvement in a Nairobi-based car break-in syndicate. The arrest occurred following a failed escape attempt at Sameer Business Park.
The incident began when a motorist returned to her vehicle parked within the business complex and discovered it had been broken into, with her laptop, tablet, and charger missing. Security personnel became suspicious of a nearby Toyota Land Cruiser with two occupants, who tried to flee when stopped for a search.
While the driver was blocked and detained at the exit gate, the second occupant escaped on foot. The detained individual, identified as Malcolm Okello, was handed over to detectives for further investigation.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the stolen laptop and charger, as well as a fake number plate (KDG 453W), wireless door jammers, and a metallic door breaker believed to be used in the break-ins. Preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle was fitted with counterfeit registration plates, likely to evade detection during criminal activities.
The DCI indicated that Okello is suspected to be part of a larger syndicate targeting parked vehicles across Nairobi, breaking in to steal valuables. The recovered items and vehicle have been impounded as evidence while investigations continue.
Authorities are pursuing the second suspect who escaped and are working to identify other members of the syndicate. Okello is currently undergoing processing ahead of court presentation on related charges.
