The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a recruitment drive to fill 20,000 Junior School teaching positions. The move aims to bolster the rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) across Kenya.

Applications opened on August 18, 2026, and will close at midnight on August 31, 2026. Only online submissions via the TSC website or Teachers Online platform will be accepted; manual applications are not allowed.

Recruitment Details

  • Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a minimum Diploma in Education.
  • They should hold at least a C+ grade in two teaching subjects at KCSE or equivalent.
  • Registration with TSC is mandatory.
  • Only unemployed teachers without disciplinary records will be considered.
  • Selection will be merit-based and aligned with county vacancy allocations.
  • Successful candidates will teach various subjects under the Junior School curriculum and remain in their current subcounties.

TSC has cautioned applicants against fraudsters and emphasised that the recruitment process is free. Suspected fraud can be reported to TSC offices, police stations, or via designated contacts including the Director of Staffing.

Context of Intern Teacher Conversion

This recruitment coincides with government plans to convert thousands of intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms. The 2026-27 national budget allocated Sh13.1 billion for this purpose, with Sh4.9 billion set aside to convert 20,000 interns starting January 2027, and Sh8.2 billion for 24,000 interns from July 2027.

The TSC has not clarified whether the current vacancies are part of this conversion or a separate recruitment exercise.

The legal backdrop includes a court ruling declaring the internship programme discriminatory. The Employment and Labour Relations Court and the Court of Appeal found that employing qualified teachers as interns violated their rights. The Supreme Court currently has an interim stay on the appellate decision, allowing the internship programme to continue while the legal process unfolds.
