Senior United Democratic Alliance (UDA) officials have downplayed the impact of former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa's resignation, claiming her departure could actually strengthen the party's unity as it gears up for the 2027 General Election.

UDA leaders, including Kilifi North MP Owen Baya and National Elections Board member Jimmy Kahindi, accused Jumwa of attempting to pressure President William Ruto into awarding her the party’s Kilifi gubernatorial ticket. They stated she threatened to quit the party if her demand was not met.

Disputed Kilifi Governor Nomination Process

Baya, who also serves as Deputy Majority Leader in the National Assembly, revealed that President Ruto had proposed conducting an opinion poll jointly with ODM to decide the Kilifi governor candidate. The agreement included offering a Cabinet Secretary position to the runner-up. However, Jumwa reportedly rejected this arrangement, insisting on an immediate guarantee of the ticket.

"As leaders from Kilifi, we cannot blackmail the President. It is disrespectful to go to State House and pressure the Head of State," Baya said.

Support and Allegations Against Jumwa

Baya further alleged that despite Jumwa’s removal from Cabinet, President Ruto continued supporting her financially, disbursing over Sh70 million. He accused her of prioritizing personal interests over public service and dismissed her claims of having no government role, citing her appointments to the Cabinet and Kenya Roads Board.

He also noted ongoing legal challenges related to her Kenya Roads Board appointment and criticized her for appealing to public sympathy through emotional tactics.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Baya asserted that UDA remains strong and committed to fielding candidates at all levels, from MCAs to the presidency. He predicted Jumwa will contest the next election outside the party, attributing her decisions partly to financial difficulties. "We wish her well wherever she chooses to go. We will meet at the ballot in August 2027," he added.

Jumwa’s Political Moves

Following her resignation, Jumwa met with Siaya Governor James Orengo, a leader in the Linda Wananchi movement, at her home. While she expressed willingness to work with like-minded leaders, she has not confirmed joining the movement. Discussions centered on engaging Kenyans to address economic challenges and growing support for the #BahaJumwa initiative.

She also held consultations with Jubilee Party Coast Region members, emphasizing collaborative efforts to improve Kilifi County and strengthen the movement’s impact.
