British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has publicly questioned Gianni Infantino’s suitability to lead FIFA, following the announcement of a contentious proposal to involve private investors in football competitions.
Burnham described the plan to sell stakes in FIFA tournaments as "outrageous," emphasizing that football should remain in the hands of its fans and participants rather than investors. He stated, "The idea that it could even be brought forward shows that, in my view, that (Infantino) is the wrong man to lead the organisation."
Earlier in the week, Burnham, an Everton supporter, expressed his disapproval on social media, asserting, "Football does not belong to investors. It belongs to the people who fill the stands and who stand on the touchline week in, week out, rain or shine."
Despite widespread opposition, FIFA has committed to continuing an "open and democratic" consultation process regarding the private investment plan, which has sparked global debate over the future governance and commercialisation of the sport.
