Utumishi Girls High School convened a special prayer service on July 30, 2026, to mark its first collective thanksgiving since reopening following the tragic dormitory fire on May 28 that resulted in 16 student fatalities.

The event united students, teachers, parents, and invited guests in prayers for healing, recovery, and success for the 2026 Form Four candidates preparing for national exams.

Principal Rufina Nkonge highlighted significant strides made since the school resumed classes on July 2, 2026, after weeks of closure. She noted that approximately 92 percent of students have returned, with learning activities fully underway.

"We have received extensive psychosocial support to help students cope with the trauma," Nkonge said. "Though the tragedy deeply affected the girls, they have gradually settled into the school routine."

She expressed gratitude to parents, the school’s sponsor and patron Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, and all stakeholders who have supported the recovery process.

Background of the Incident and Legal Developments

The fire broke out in the early hours at a dormitory in Gilgil, causing injuries to 79 students alongside the 16 fatalities. The incident led to the school's immediate closure as investigations were launched.

Following safety reviews and the introduction of counseling programs, the Ministry of Education permitted phased reopening to ensure a safe learning environment.

Regarding the ongoing legal proceedings, the High Court on July 1, 2026, ruled that the eight students charged in connection with the fire be referred to as "subject minors" rather than accused persons, emphasizing their status as children. Their identities are to remain confidential throughout the process.

The court dismissed 16 murder charges against them and ordered pre-bail reports ahead of the next hearing set for September 22, 2026.
