A 27-year-old Venezuelan woman, identified as Sofia to protect her identity, fell victim to a human trafficking scheme after responding to a job advertisement on Facebook Marketplace promising employment in Trinidad and Tobago with all expenses paid.
Facing financial hardship while raising her seven-year-old son alone, Sofia had previously sold personal hygiene products door-to-door but was forced to seek new opportunities as her income dwindled.
Deceptive Recruitment and Captivity
Sofia was contacted via WhatsApp by a woman named “Valentina,” who convinced her the job offer was genuine. Upon arrival in Trinidad and Tobago, Sofia discovered the people who met her were different from those she had communicated with, and the promised job did not exist.
Instead, she was forced into sexual exploitation and held captive by traffickers. Despite pressure to recruit other Venezuelan women using similar false promises, Sofia refused to participate.
Escape and Rescue
Her opportunity to escape came when she was sent outside to dispose of garbage. Sofia seized the moment to slip away and entered a taxi where she encountered a Dominican woman who immediately sensed something was wrong.
The woman encouraged Sofia to report her situation to the police, leading to Sofia’s first feeling of safety since her arrival. This marked the beginning of her recovery process.
Support and Rehabilitation
Trinidad and Tobago’s Counter Trafficking Unit, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), provided Sofia with medical care, counseling, safe shelter, and vocational training.
The collaboration also includes training for counter-trafficking personnel and public awareness campaigns to help others recognize trafficking signs.

Sofia has shared her experience with her family and remains determined to build a stable future through education and career development. She urges others to exercise caution when responding to online job offers, emphasizing the importance of verification.
"Not everything is real," she warns, encouraging vigilance to prevent others from enduring similar ordeals.
