Former Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri has publicly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after the arrest of his ally, Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia.
Kaguchia spent the night at Royal Media Services (RMS) seeking refuge amid fears of arrest by plainclothes officers. He was eventually taken into custody on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the RMS premises following reports that heavily armed and hooded officers had surrounded the media station.
Ngunjiri, a long-time vocal critic of Gachagua, suggested that if Gachagua were like the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, he would have stood alongside Kaguchia in protest. Instead, Ngunjiri noted, Gachagua has remained distant.
“If Gachagua was Raila (like he wants to be), he’d have been at the TV station last night and at the DCI this morning with Kaguchia. But he will stay away from Kaguchia for now,” Ngunjiri said.

Kaguchia is under investigation for allegedly making inciteful remarks during a political event in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County, on August 1, 2026.
Opposition leaders and lawyers remained at RMS overnight, accusing security agencies of intimidation tactics against the MP.
Legal Team Denied Access
Kaguchia’s lawyers, led by advocates Ndegwa Njiru and Wakili Muriu, stated they were prevented from meeting their client at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters shortly after his arrest.
They expressed concerns over the denial of access despite their timely arrival at the DCI offices.
