Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has called on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to concentrate on developing his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) rather than attempting to weaken other opposition parties.
In a statement on August 4, 2026, Wambugu highlighted the competitive political landscape in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election, noting that multiple parties and candidates will contest various positions.
"Mt Kenya will have many parties and multiple candidates per position. So Jofri should focus on his party the way he wants, but without undermining other parties," Wambugu said.
He also reminded Gachagua that many opposition leaders were already outside government before his tenure and suggested that Gachagua contributed to their opposition status.
"He found us in the opposition. Actually, he put us there!" Wambugu added.
Calls for Respectful Political Engagement
Wambugu's remarks follow criticism from other political figures, including Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi and Party of National Unity leader Peter Munya, who condemned Gachagua's reported attempts to persuade them to dissolve their parties and join the DCP.
During a joint address on August 4, 2026, Munya urged political leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and instead foster respectful dialogue and cooperation among like-minded parties.
- "We call upon Honourable Gachagua to desist from divisive pronouncements and instead embrace structured dialogue, consultation, and respectful engagement among all like-minded political parties," Munya said.
- He emphasized that strong political partnerships require equality, trust, and respect for each party's autonomy.
