The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially rescinded its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's bid for re-election, citing significant concerns over his governance and leadership.
Infantino, who has served as FIFA president, faced widespread criticism after proposing private investment in the World Cup tournaments, including both the men's and women's events. His plan, which included offering $40 million to each of FIFA’s 211 member associations in exchange for backing the initiative, was ultimately abandoned following backlash from multiple continental football confederations.
In a statement released on August 3, 2026, the FAW expressed that Infantino’s recent failures in governance, stakeholder communication, and prioritizing football’s best interests have led to a loss of confidence in his leadership. The association stated:
"Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept."
The English Football Association has also withdrawn its support, aligning itself with UEFA's position that Infantino no longer enjoys the confidence of European football’s governing body. Similarly, CONCACAF has called for a thorough review of Infantino’s leadership, while the Asian Football Confederation has urged for greater transparency within FIFA.
Infantino’s re-election contest is scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco, where these developments could influence voting among FIFA’s member associations.
