President William Ruto’s recent visit to Busia County coincided with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s grassroots rallies across Trans Nzoia and Bungoma, underscoring Western Kenya’s rising prominence in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election.

While Ruto attended a religious ceremony in Busia, Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement engaged voters in Kiminini, Kimilili, Chwele, and Bungoma town, signaling a strategic focus on the region.

Western Kenya: A Political Hotspot

Historically important to political parties, Western Kenya is evolving from a passive political arena to an active battleground where candidates must directly engage voters. Sifuna’s campaign emphasizes democratic governance, accountability, and respect for devolution—messages that resonate strongly with local communities.

He accused the national government of undermining county governments by restricting funds, stating, “As a governor, you know the biggest enemy of devolution is William Ruto.” Sifuna also highlighted Senate efforts to increase county allocations being frustrated at the national level.

Sifuna’s Grassroots Approach

Unlike campaigns backed by wealthy donors, Sifuna promotes funding from ordinary citizens, arguing this approach prevents undue influence by affluent financiers. He pledged to reduce fuel prices by Ksh10 if elected president, matching the small Ksh10 contributions from supporters—a straightforward economic promise aimed at connecting with everyday voters.

Ruto Faces Growing Political Challenge

Although large crowds do not guarantee electoral success, Sifuna’s growing presence and pointed criticism of government policies represent a political alternative focused on decentralization and accountability. His stance on affordable housing and opposition to the president’s directive on handling violent protests have sparked public debate.

President Ruto has responded dismissively to Sifuna’s affordable housing critiques, illustrating the emerging political rivalry. Both leaders’ activities in Western Kenya send a clear signal: the region is a key arena for persuasion as the 2027 elections approach.
