Leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Western Kenya have intensified efforts to position Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election.
During the handover of the Luanda NG-CDF project at Kima Mission Ground on July 31, 2026, local ODM officials highlighted Oparanya’s experience, national appeal, and loyalty as key assets to strengthen the government’s broad-based coalition.
Support from Western Leaders
- Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka emphasized the need to back Oparanya as Deputy President, stating that ODM should secure the position to consolidate the partnership with Ruto’s administration.
- ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo underlined the importance of maintaining the party’s influence within government structures to remain a strong player nationally.
- Other notable attendees included Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba, Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo, Luanda MP Dick Maungu, and various county assembly members.
Oparanya Calls for Regional Unity
Responding to the endorsements, CS Oparanya urged Western Kenya residents to unite under ODM and increase voter registration to boost the region’s political leverage.
He cautioned against supporting opposition parties, arguing that their track record lacked development initiatives, contrasting this with the benefits of backing the ruling government.
Governor Wilber Ottichilo echoed these sentiments, encouraging locals to support the government to continue accessing development projects.
ODM’s Strategic Bid for Deputy Presidency
The push for Oparanya as Deputy President reflects ODM’s broader strategy to negotiate key government positions ahead of the 2027 elections. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed recently indicated that ODM aims to partner with President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and secure the deputy presidency if the UDA retains power.
Junet identified Oparanya as the party’s preferred candidate, highlighting his long-standing leadership roles, including as Deputy Party Leader and Cabinet Secretary.
