East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Winnie Odinga has expressed uncertainty about supporting President William Ruto’s re-election in the 2027 general election.

In a recent interview, Odinga described the question of her personal backing as challenging and emphasized she has not made a final decision.

ODM’s Role in Endorsement

Odinga highlighted that endorsement decisions rest with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and its members rather than individuals. She pointed out that the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) will play a key role in determining ODM’s official position on the presidential race.

"On endorsing Ruto, it is the ODM members who will decide. I cannot speak for all members, and that is where the NDC comes in," she stated.

Internal Debate Over ODM’s Political Direction

Her remarks come amid ongoing discussions within ODM about its future following a 2025 cooperation agreement with President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The alliance, aimed at easing political tensions and supporting governance reforms, has led to closer collaboration between some ODM leaders and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

This cooperation has sparked debate inside ODM, with some advocating for continued partnership with Ruto, while others push for the party to field or back its own presidential candidate.

Focus on Kenyans’ Welfare

Earlier this year, Odinga urged ODM leaders to prioritise addressing social and economic issues affecting Kenyans over early talks on political coalitions and succession.

"The only conversation the leadership of ODM should be having now is the well-being of the people of Kenya," she said, describing coalition discussions as premature.

Changing Leadership and Future Outlook

Since the death of long-serving ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2025, the party has undergone significant changes. Oburu Odinga was elected party leader in March 2026, with the National Delegates Conference continuing to make major strategic decisions.

Political analysts view ODM’s stance on the 2027 presidential election as a critical factor in Kenya’s political landscape. Winnie Odinga’s current position leaves the question open, indicating any official support for President Ruto will depend on collective party deliberations.
