Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, has cast doubt on President William Ruto’s preparedness for a second term in the 2027 General Election.

In a recent interview with Nigerian journalist Edmund Obilo, Winnie acknowledged some progress under Ruto’s leadership but emphasized that more work remains before he can justifiably seek re-election.

On President Ruto’s performance:

  • Winnie stated, "I think he could do more," highlighting that the current administration’s achievements have not fully met public expectations.

Regarding her support for Ruto’s 2027 bid:

  • She described the question as challenging and said she has not yet decided.
  • Winnie also speculated that if Raila Odinga were still alive, he might have contested the presidency again given the widespread dissatisfaction with the current government and slow development progress.

On the state of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM):

  • Winnie urged ODM leaders to empower party members in shaping its future, warning against internal power struggles overshadowing supporters’ interests.
  • She expressed disappointment over ODM’s current direction, lamenting that it no longer embodies the social democratic values it once championed.
  • Winnie clarified that ODM is a party owned by Kenyans, not the Odinga family, dismissing claims that it belongs to her family.
