Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in the Coast Region, in partnership with Mariakani Police Station officers, have arrested a 45-year-old woman for transporting cannabis sativa concealed beneath banana sacks on a passenger bus.
The operation, guided by intelligence reports, took place at the Mariakani Weighbridge where the bus traveling from Busia to Mombasa was stopped for inspection. Officers discovered five gunny bags filled with cannabis hidden under bananas.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the suspect was arrested on the spot and is undergoing processing ahead of court arraignment. The seized cannabis remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Recent Anti-Narcotics Efforts in Mariakani
- This arrest follows a similar operation two days earlier where two suspected drug traffickers were detained with 84 large rolls of cannabis in Mariakani Township.
- In that case, police intercepted a motorcycle transporting the narcotics and confiscated both the drugs and the vehicle.
Authorities emphasize their commitment to combating drug trafficking and encourage the public to provide information that aids in dismantling criminal networks.
Broader Regional Crackdowns
About a month ago, law enforcement conducted coordinated raids in Mombasa, Kitengela, and Busia, resulting in five arrests and the seizure of large quantities of cannabis. Notably, a lorry transporting approximately 450 kilograms of cannabis valued at Sh12.15 million was intercepted along a key Coast transport corridor.
