Kenya’s Lilian Odira, reigning world champion in the 800 metres, has secured her place in the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a commanding semi-final victory. Making her debut at the Games, Odira clocked a time of 1:59.39 to win the first semi-final and advance confidently to Friday’s medal race.
Odira led the race from start to finish, finishing ahead of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ Shafiqua Maloney who recorded 1:59.81, and Jamaica’s Kelly-Ann Beckford in 1:59.96. The Kenyan remains the only athlete from her country in the women’s 800m final after compatriot Janet Jepkemoi narrowly missed qualification.
Reflecting on her performance, the 27-year-old Odira expressed gratitude for reaching the final in her first Commonwealth Games appearance. She acknowledged the chilly Glasgow weather as a challenge but said her body has adapted well. "It is very cold, but we have to adapt to it. My body is responding well," she noted.
Odira is aware of the strong competition awaiting her in the final and is preparing to adjust her tactics accordingly. "The competition here is very hard. The ladies are very fast," she said. She added that she and her coach will devise a new strategy for the final, with a clear goal: "I am going to fight for a podium finish."
Odira’s rise in the 800m event has been impressive, having won silver at the 2024 African Championships in Douala and then clinching the world title in Tokyo in 2025 with a championship record of 1:54.62. The Commonwealth Games final scheduled for 10:25 pm Kenyan time offers her another opportunity to add a major medal to her collection.
Although Jepkemoi did not progress to the final, Odira praised her for reaching the semi-finals in her first major international championship. The final promises to be a tightly contested race featuring some of the fastest women in the discipline.
