The World Bank Group (WBG) has launched the application process for its 2027 Africa Fellowship Programme, aiming to engage emerging development researchers and policymakers from Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya.
Announced on 15 July 2026, the six-month fellowship places selected candidates at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., or in country offices, starting January 2027. The programme focuses on hands-on involvement in economic policy design, research, technical assistance, and lending operations aligned with poverty reduction and shared prosperity goals.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be nationals of Sub-Saharan African countries, including Kenya.
- Must be 32 years old or younger as of 1 January 2027.
- Enrolled in the final year of a PhD programme or have completed a doctorate within the last three years.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills are required.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
- Fields of study relevant to the World Bank’s mandate such as economics, public policy, finance, and development studies are preferred.
Application Process and Selection
Applications are open until 25 August 2026 and can be submitted through the World Bank Group’s official portal. The selection involves two phases: an initial shortlisting based on specialization, followed by final selection in consultation with relevant WBG units. Successful fellows will be hired as World Bank consultants for the fellowship duration.
