Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed relief and optimism as Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk prepares to rejoin the team following the overturning of his doping ban.
Mudryk, who tested positive for a banned substance in 2024, was initially handed a four-year suspension. However, after a successful appeal to the Football Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency, the ban was lifted, allowing him to resume his professional career.
Alonso, speaking from Sydney, highlighted the emotional toll the suspension had taken on Mudryk and emphasized the club's commitment to supporting him through a careful reintegration process.
- Mudryk will join Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong, where they face Juventus.
- The 25-year-old has not played competitively since November 2024.
- Alonso cautioned that Mudryk’s return to full fitness and match readiness will take time.
"We want him to feel part of the team again," Alonso said. "It has been a long time since he has experienced that support, and we understand how difficult training alone must have been for him."
The winger, who transferred from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea for £62 million in 2023, will be eased back into training and competition gradually.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously coached Mudryk at Shakhtar Donetsk, also expressed his happiness about the player's return, praising his character and talent.
Changes in anti-doping regulations mean that under current rules, Mudryk’s test might not have led to charges, a factor that contributed to the success of his appeal.
