Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims that President William Ruto will rig the 2027 General Election, emphasizing increased voter vigilance across Kenya.

Speaking during a live interview from his Karen home, Gachagua pointed to the recent Ol Kalou by-election as a demonstration of how opposition supporters successfully protected their votes despite intimidation attempts.

Lessons from Ol Kalou By-Election

"Voting alone is insufficient; voters must also safeguard their ballots," said Gachagua, highlighting that the Ol Kalou experience provided a practical blueprint for election monitoring. He noted that efforts to intimidate voters in Ol Kalou failed, with widespread calls from across the country to replicate the model.

Concerns Over IEBC's Role

Gachagua questioned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) capacity to oversee a free and fair election, accusing the body of not condemning voter suppression and bribery witnessed during Ol Kalou.

He lamented the loss of two individuals who were protecting votes during the by-election, underscoring the challenges faced by electoral observers.

Criticism of Kenya Kwanza Government

The DCP leader renewed criticism of President Ruto, accusing his administration of betraying voters from the Mt Kenya region despite prior warnings. He described the Ol Kalou outcome as a warning signal to the Kenya Kwanza government ahead of the national polls.

Reflection on Mbeere North By-Election

Gachagua also reflected on the Mbeere North by-election defeat, attributing it to inadequate vote protection, widespread bribery, and intimidation, particularly targeting elderly voters. He claimed some voters were paid the balance of bribes after providing proof of their vote choice.

He concluded that without voter suppression and police intimidation, DCP would have secured a more decisive victory in Ol Kalou.
