Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has concluded his tour of Meru County, emphasizing three critical priorities for residents: security, the miraa market, and access to clean water.
Addressing residents in Laare, Igembe North, Gachagua assured the community that their concerns had been heard and would be front and centre in his agenda. "Your security, market for miraa, and provision of clean water remain priorities that are non-negotiable," he stated.
He also called on voters to reject what he termed misleading leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election, reminding them, "On August 10, 2027, we have a date with destiny." This meeting was part of a broader grassroots engagement across Embu and Meru counties aimed at strengthening his political foothold in Mt Kenya East.
Engagements Across Igembe
Prior to Laare, Gachagua held discussions in Athiru Gaiti Ward (Igembe South) and Muringene (Igembe Central). In Athiru Gaiti, he highlighted the need for improved water supply and better markets for agricultural produce, particularly miraa, which many families rely on for income.
He criticized the current administration under President William Ruto for policies he says have negatively impacted local residents and pledged that opposition leaders would continue to raise these issues.
At Muringene, Gachagua commended the residents' resolve to support political change, interpreting their warm reception as a sign of growing unity among Kenyans seeking a new government in 2027.
Meru: A Strategic Battleground for 2027
The tour underscores Meru's emerging role as a pivotal region in the contest for Mt Kenya votes. Gachagua aims to maintain his influence in the area following his political split with President Ruto. Meanwhile, government-aligned leaders are working to keep Mt Kenya East aligned with the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Despite his commitments, Gachagua did not provide specific timelines, budgets, or detailed strategies to address the challenges of security, water provision, and miraa market development. These issues are expected to remain central as both government and opposition vie for voter support in Meru ahead of the 2027 elections.
