Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and recognized as Ghana's tallest man, passed away on Monday, July 27, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. He was 32 years old.
Awuche, who hailed from Gambaga in Ghana’s North East Region, stood approximately 7 feet 8 inches tall. He had lived with gigantism for several years, a condition that severely affected his health and mobility.
Medical Challenges and Support
Financial difficulties had long prevented Awuche from receiving the specialised medical care he needed. His public appeal for assistance in 2023 drew significant attention and sympathy nationwide.
In July 2026, prominent businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama pledged to cover all of Awuche’s medical expenses after his condition worsened. Initially treated at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, Awuche was later referred to Tamale Teaching Hospital for more advanced care.
Complications from gigantism led to a severe infection in his left leg, which at one point prompted doctors to recommend amputation. However, a detailed reassessment by the medical team reversed that decision, and amputation was no longer deemed necessary.
Rafik Mahama, a spokesperson for Ibrahim Mahama, confirmed that treatment was ongoing and that Ibrahim Mahama remained committed to supporting Awuche’s recovery.
Legacy
Awuche’s death concludes a lengthy and difficult struggle against a debilitating condition that affected his quality of life for years. His story highlighted the challenges faced by individuals with rare medical conditions in accessing adequate healthcare.
