The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a partial closure on Waiyaki Way to enable maintenance activities. The affected section is the Mombasa-bound lanes between the Global Trade Centre (GTC) and Villarosa Kempinski.

The closure will begin on Friday, July 31, 2026, and is expected to last until Monday, August 31, 2026. This move is aimed at facilitating essential repair and upgrade works along this busy corridor.

Areas Impacted

The closure will impact thousands of motorists traveling to and from several Nairobi estates along the route, including:

  • Westlands
  • Parklands
  • Kangemi
  • Mountain View
  • Kitisuru
  • Loresho
  • Kyuna
  • Spring Valley
  • Highridge
  • Muthangari
  • Lower Kabete
  • Parts of Riverside

Since Waiyaki Way is a key artery connecting Nairobi to the Rift Valley via the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, the closure is expected to cause wider traffic disruptions.

Traffic Management and Recommendations

KeNHA has advised motorists to use the remaining open lanes on Waiyaki Way and to explore alternative routes to reduce congestion, particularly during peak hours. Authorities will deploy police officers and traffic marshals along the affected section to manage traffic flow and ensure safety.

KeNHA’s statement reads: "All motorists intending to use Waiyaki Way during this period will utilise the unclosed sections of this road as well as consider using alternative routes to ensure minimal traffic disruption. Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site."

Related Infrastructure Projects

This partial closure coincides with ongoing works on a Ksh4.5 billion project to enhance capacity and beautify roads linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to ABC Place in Westlands. The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is executing the upgrades, which include:

  • Drainage improvements
  • Pedestrian walkway construction
  • Highway resurfacing
  • Enhanced street lighting
  • New cabro pavements
  • Landscaping with flower planting

The upgrades aim to restore and modernize the road network affected by the Nairobi Expressway construction.
