Kenya Power has confirmed a system outage impacting its prepaid vending and bill payment platforms, leaving customers unable to purchase electricity tokens or pay bills through any channel.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the utility attributed the disruption to a technical fault affecting the systems responsible for token sales and bill payments. The company apologized for the inconvenience and assured customers that updates will be provided once services are restored.

Context of Recent Power Disruptions

This incident follows a widespread blackout that occurred on Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m., which affected major regions including Nairobi, the Coast, Mt Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift. Some areas in the North Rift and Western regions were not affected.

Kenya Power explained the blackout was caused by a technical disturbance in the national grid but confirmed full restoration of power to all affected areas by 2:00 a.m. on Thursday. Restoration was carried out in phases, beginning with the Lanet, Naivasha, and Juja Road substations by 10:11 p.m., before extending to other regions.
