Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi to approach retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and seek his support in fostering unity within the Mount Kenya community as the 2027 General Election approaches.
Speaking in Meru on July 25, 2026, Kindiki emphasized Kiraitu’s extensive political experience and regional influence as key reasons he is suited for this mission. He urged Kiraitu to discuss with Uhuru the importance of maintaining a united political front among Mount Kenya leaders.
“You know, Kiraitu has an unmatched track record. Even I haven’t reached his level,” Kindiki said, adding that Uhuru remains a pivotal figure due to his leadership history and sway in the region.
Kindiki recalled his involvement in Uhuru’s legal defence during the International Criminal Court cases at The Hague, highlighting the longstanding political alliance between Uhuru and William Ruto.
Appeal for Regional Unity
Kindiki tasked Kiraitu to ensure Uhuru promotes cohesion and prevents fragmentation within the Mount Kenya community. He warned against allowing divergent political voices that could divide the region.
“We cannot accept this community speaking in different languages politically. We must speak one language, and that language is TUTAM,” Kindiki stated. The slogan TUTAM is associated with President William Ruto’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid.
Kindiki’s remarks follow his earlier calls for unity, including a July 19 statement in Embu where he rejected proposals to split Mount Kenya into separate political blocs.
Mount Kenya Political Dynamics
The appeal comes amid intensifying competition over Mount Kenya’s political direction. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku have both advocated for different approaches to regional representation and unity.
Kindiki opposes moves toward division, stressing that political rivalry should not sever longstanding community bonds. He linked unity to the TUTAM agenda and alignment with the current government, noting that the 2027 vote may be President Ruto’s final election before retirement, akin to Uhuru’s political trajectory.
