Beyond Bulbs: Timing and Brightness Matter

The issue extends beyond the type of light bulbs to include the timing and intensity of light exposure. Screens from smartphones, TVs, and computers also emit blue light, further influencing the circadian system. Experts recommend limiting bright artificial light during evening hours to support healthy sleep cycles.

In urban areas like Nairobi and neighborhoods such as Eastleigh, extended commercial and social activities contribute to prolonged exposure to artificial light. Many homes lack sufficient natural daylight during the day, while bright lights and screen use continue late into the night. Factors such as closed curtains during daytime and bright ceiling lights at night exacerbate the problem.
