Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has defended the Kenya Kwanza administration’s development efforts in Rift Valley, countering social media allegations that the region has been overlooked ahead of President William Ruto’s upcoming visit.

Speaking in Bomet on July 25, 2026, Murkomen emphasized that government-funded projects are being executed fairly across all counties, including Bomet, which is receiving significant investment similar to other parts of the country.

Development Projects Underway

Murkomen highlighted several infrastructure initiatives under construction in Rift Valley, many of which were planned during his previous tenure as Roads Cabinet Secretary. Notable projects include:

  • Kapkwen–Olbutyo–Siongiroi road, now entering implementation after contractor selection
  • Kaptembuliet road
  • Sachora–Sigor–Chebunyo road
  • Chebole–Siongiroi–Chebunyo road
  • Kapkoros access road
  • Silibwet–Merigi road
  • Silibwet–Olenguruone–Mauche road

Some contractors have already mobilized on site, with others expected to commence work shortly.

Bomet Town Transformation

The CS also noted ongoing urban upgrades in Bomet Town, including road improvements and expansion of the Kapkwen Airstrip, which will feature a passenger terminal and connecting roads. Additionally, the government is investing approximately Ksh1.2 billion in the Affordable Housing Programme, with the second phase set to begin following the completion of the initial phase.

Support for Road Sector Reforms

Murkomen praised Roads and Transport CS Davis Chirchir for advancing projects initiated during his tenure and for implementing road financing reforms, particularly the securitisation of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund. He criticized opposition politicians for opposing the securitisation plan on political grounds despite prior support.

These remarks come as President Ruto continues his nationwide development tours, commissioning completed projects and reviewing ongoing infrastructure, amidst growing political scrutiny of the government’s development record. The President’s visit to Rift Valley is anticipated soon.
