Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed his commitment to financing his political movement, Linda Mwananchi, through grassroots contributions rather than relying on wealthy individuals. Speaking during a tour in Trans Nzoia County on July 25, 2026, Sifuna revealed that the movement had raised Ksh3 million in under three days via a paybill system.
"Some say we have no money, but Kitale residents have already contributed Ksh10 billion through our paybill. In less than three days, we collected Ksh3 million," he said, emphasizing the power of small donations from ordinary Kenyans.
Rejecting Billion-Shilling Offers
Days earlier, Sifuna declined an offer by Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli to help raise Ksh1 billion for his presidential campaign. During a radio interview on July 21, 2026, Sifuna stated that he preferred support from everyday citizens over large donations from wealthy backers.
"I do not need that money. Let Kenyans continue giving me money. I would rather be indebted to Kenyans who give me Ksh10 than to Atwoli," he remarked.
Concerns Over Wealthy Donor Influence
Sifuna warned that accepting funds from affluent supporters could lead to demands for tenders and other favours if he wins the 2027 presidential race. He urged an end to the reliance on what he termed "dirty money" in politics, questioning the source of large donations and highlighting the struggles of workers contrasted with billion-shilling promises.
He also cited the Ol Kalou by-election as evidence that money alone does not secure electoral victory, stating, "Money is not the answer."
Background on Atwoli's Offer
Atwoli made the Ksh1 billion pledge at a fundraiser held on July 12, 2026, at Mwichina Church of God in Lurambi Constituency, asserting that established leaders and networks were key to winning the presidency.
Sifuna's stance has intensified discussions on political campaign financing, positioning Linda Mwananchi as a people-powered initiative driven by small contributions rather than wealthy financiers.
