Spotify has unveiled a new feature aimed at enhancing transparency on its platform by clearly marking artist profiles that are AI-generated. The AI Persona label will help listeners differentiate between real human artists and synthetic personas behind the music.
Addressing Listener Concerns
Users have reported feeling misled when they follow artist profiles that appear human but are actually created by artificial intelligence. The new badge will appear prominently on the artist’s profile, in search results, and on tracks within playlists starting mid-September.
How the AI Persona Label Works
- The badge will be displayed on the artist’s profile page, banner, About section, and track listings.
- Listeners can tap the badge to learn whether the AI identity was disclosed by the artist or assigned by Spotify’s review team.
- Music from AI Personas will be excluded from personalized recommendation algorithms by default, appearing only if users choose to follow those profiles.
Identification and Verification Process
From August 11, artists can voluntarily disclose their AI-generated status via Spotify for Artists. Spotify will complement this with a combination of human review and AI tools to detect undisclosed AI profiles, focusing initially on those with significant audience reach.
Artists tagged through Spotify’s review process will be notified and can contest or confirm the label. Plans are underway to allow listeners to report suspected AI Personas, though details are forthcoming.
Building Trust and Authenticity
The AI Persona label is part of a broader initiative by Spotify to bolster trust, alongside features like Verified by Spotify and Artist Profile Protection, which verify real artist identities and prevent misattribution.
In a related effort to highlight genuine artistry, Spotify recently named Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Somi as its EQUAL Africa Artist for August. This programme supports women artists shaping Africa’s music scene and aligns with Spotify’s commitment to authentic stories behind the music.
