Spotify’s Culture Club Podcast Highlights Africa’s Expanding Music Influence

Spotify has intensified its focus on African music through its editorial podcast, Culture Club, which debuted in October 2025. The series, now with ten episodes, explores diverse themes such as Afrobeats’ global rise and the increasing prominence of female artists in Amapiano.

The podcast offers artists a platform to share their creative journeys in depth, moving beyond brief soundbites. Notable discussions include Nigerian rapper LADIPOE on the resurgence of Nigerian hip-hop, supported by a 3,080% increase in local streams since 2021, and Zee Nxumalo on amplifying female voices within the Amapiano genre.

East African music scenes also receive attention, with Joshua Baraka emphasizing Uganda and the broader East African region as distinct musical hubs rather than extensions of West African influence. Additionally, Lekompo—a genre predominantly popular in South African streets and social media—gains rare mainstream exposure.

Streaming Data and Market Dynamics

Spotify’s data underscores the rapid growth of African music on its platform. Artists like Wizkid have amassed over 11 billion streams, while Burna Boy boasts around 46.84 million monthly listeners, marking him as the continent’s most followed artist on Spotify. Despite this growth, these figures still trail global superstars like Taylor Swift, who has roughly 127 billion streams worldwide.

However, the financial benefits from streaming remain uneven. Royalties vary significantly by region, with streams from African markets typically generating lower payouts compared to those from wealthier countries. Spotify does not publicly disclose the number of African Premium subscribers, grouping the continent under the “Rest of World” category. African users make up approximately 2% of Spotify’s global monthly active user base.

Emerging Audiences and Trends

The podcast also sheds light on the changing demographics behind Africa’s music consumption. Nairobi leads the continent with 53.7% of streams coming from Gen Z listeners aged 18 to 24, surpassing Lagos and Johannesburg. Within Kenya, genres like dancehall have seen a 95% year-on-year increase in streams, alongside steady growth in gospel and other local styles.

These trends point to a distinct East African sound gaining momentum across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, fueled primarily by young audiences both locally and internationally.

Future Prospects and Limitations

Culture Club has the potential to evolve into a discovery platform that spotlights emerging African artists and lesser-known genres, moving beyond the continent’s already established stars. Yet, the podcast stops short of addressing the crucial issue of streaming revenue disparities, a complex topic tied to subscription models and regional royalty policies.

While Culture Club effectively celebrates Africa’s rich musical landscape, it also highlights the challenges that remain in ensuring equitable financial rewards for artists amid the continent’s growing global influence.
